Three years after Hurricane Katrina destroyed his home and drowned his girlfriend, Gabrielle, ex-New Orleans assistant DA Ken Marchand ekes out a living on the North Shore helping people whose lives were ravaged by the storm. But one hot August afternoon, on a visit to his old New Orleans neighborhood, he sees police standing over a body. Later on, curious, he visits the crime scene and is accosted by Detective Konrad Treacher, who wants to know what he's doing there. What follows is a cat-and-mouse contest Gabrielle is not dead at all, and that he is at the center of a plot almost too bizarre to be believed. The story ends as a new hurricane, Gustav, bears down on the area, almost three years to the day after Katrina, leaving Marchand to face the truth.
