The author himself included this story in his list of "12 favorite stories about Sherlock Holmes." The Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Lord Bellinger, and Trelawney Hope, the Secretary of State for European Affairs, turn to Holmes for help in finding the document that was stolen from Hope's house. If the document is made public, it could have very serious consequences for the whole of Europe, even the war. No one in the house knew about the document, not even the secretary's wife. Holmes begins the investigation by analyzing the activities of known foreign spies in Britain, and learns from Dr. Watson that one of them was killed. Eduardo Lucas was killed in his own house.
