When Lena Sadowska's Polish village is invaded by the Soviets, she and her family are banished to a work camp in the barren lands of Siberia. Portraying Lena's persistence through horrible circumstances, Ackroyd provides a mostly straight delivery with only subtle shifts in dialogue. Like the snow hare who endures the horrible winters, Lena not only survives, but also finds a way to thrive. The production adds an echo effect for the narration of dreams and memories, helping the listener recognize when Lena, as an old woman, reflects on both the losses and loves of her tumultuous life.
