This year marks the 50th anniversary of The Sound of Music, the classic Rogers and Hammerstein musical. Upon its initial release, the film was detested by critics but beloved by audiences. Twentieth-Century Fox, which had almost been bankrupted by the excesses of Cleopatra, wasn't enthusiastic initially and endorsed several cost-saving devices, such as casting the lesser-known Julie Andrews instead of Audrey Hepburn in the lead role.
