The testicular descent (descensus testis) is described in a complete series of human material from stage 14 CC to the adult state by using own phases. Central points of interest in this work are answers to questions which have been discussed controversially by generations of scientists and which are wrong or inadequately documented in most textbooks of embryology: Does an inner gonadal descent exist? What about origin, role and fate of gubernaculum H., processus vaginalis peritonei and gonadal ligaments? How do the annexes of testis come into their final position? The results are based on serial sections, scanning electron microscopy, three-dimensional reconstructions, microdissection and immunohistochemistry.

This book concerns testicular and ovarian descent in the human embryo. It is not limited to the gonads, but also deals with the development of the cranial mesonephric ligament, the gubernaculum, the processus vaginalis in both the male and female, and the ovarian ligament in the female. The purpose is to provide a complete analysis of the process of gonadal descent in humans. The book attempts to clarify areas where controversy exists, such as the relationship of the ovarian ligament to the gubernaculum and the actual role that the gubernaculum plays in the migration of the testis into the scrotum. Because of the specificity of the topic, the book is primarily directed to embryologists and developmental biologists. The authors are both credible researchers with previous publications in this area. The authors use a variety of techniques to examine the topic. They are obviously well versed in the literature, and cite numerous references throughout the work. Their analysis is based upon examination of human embryos using a variety of anatomical techniques, including serial sectioning, scanning electron microscopy and immunohistological labeling. The text is abundantly illustrated with actual micrographs, three-dimensional drawings and tables. The quality of the micrographs is very good, and their orientation within the embryo is clear. This text is a thorough examination of the topic of gonadal descent and, as such, is a valuable addition to the field of human embryology.
