Overview

This book is the first English language translation of the famous Tibetan death text, "The Great Liberation upon Hearing in the Intermediate State." Also known as the "Bardo Thodol" which means "liberation by hearing on the after death plane", it was originally written in the Tibetan language and is meant to be a guide for those who have died as they transition from their former life to a new destination.

About the Author

According to Tibetan Tradition, this work was composed in the 8th century by Padmasambhava, written down by his primary student, Yeshe Tsogyal, buried in the Gampo hills in central Tibet, and subsequently discovered in the 12th century by a Tibetan terton, Karma Lingpa. The actual translation of the texts was performed by Tibetan Buddhists, primarily Lama Kazi Dawa-Samdup (1868–1922), a teacher of English. Walter Yeeling Evans-Wentz (1878 – 1965), was responsible for editing and compiling the work. He was an anthropologist and writer who was a pioneer in the study of Tibetan Buddhism. His Tibetan Book of the Dead was read at his funeral.
