Purpose: The purpose of this book is to aid UK-based healthcare providers who care for families undergoing IVF procedures to enhance communication between providers and families. The book provides extensive references and meets its objectives.
Audience: This book's primary audience is mostly UK-based healthcare providers, nurses, midwives, and health visitors. It does have a broad enough reach to be applicable in most high and middle-income countries with integrated health systems. The authors are credible in their fields and are long-term experts in providing individualized care.
Features: The book is an extensive review of parenthood after successful IVF and what the healthcare provider can do to enhance their care provision. The chapters cover the transition to parenthood, sex, gender, stigma and disclosure in infertility and IVF, anxiety, and family building. There are comprehensive references with great links to online blogs and resources. There are inclusive black and white illustrations; however, the illustration on page 29 is wordy and difficult to read.
Assessment: The book's authors are UK-based, and the book focuses on the healthcare offered there. A similar book might be In Pursuit of Parenthood: Experiences of IVF, Brian (Bloomsbury Publishing PLC, 1998). This would be a useful addition to a busy nurse-midwife's library to "look" into someone else's life.
