The Trap at Comanche Bend

FOOL'S GOLD

Like a vulture descending on a rotting corpse, Jerry Aiken could smell gold nuggets from a mile away, and he'd do anything to keep his pockets full. A cardsharp, a cattleman, a hired gun-he'd tried every legal means in the West to strike the mother lode. It wasn't until a wealthy Eastern dude offered him some easy money that Aiken strayed outside the law.

All Jerry had to do was kidnap the rich man's daughter and scare some sense into her. But all hell broke loose when the hellion heiress escaped. If Aiken couldn't get her back, the only reward he'd get would be a long stretch in the territorial hoosegow.

Editorial Reviews

Library Journal

Imagine New York high society turned loose on the wildest town of the Western frontier. The town, seemingly one step from hell, doesn't know the meaning of trouble until it comes face to face with Nancy Scovil. Her encounter with the courtly gentlemen of the range in Grogan's Saloon leaves turmoil and destruction behind. On this forsaken landscape, the smile of a beautiful woman is rarer than gold, and each fellow is convinced that Nan smiles just for him. Author Brand has written under many names and across genres, and his style here might best be described as ``Wodehouse West.'' The Trap at Comanche Bend has a touch of O. Henry's classic story ``The Ransom of Red Chief,'' a smattering of Wodehouse, and a bit of the Wild West that readers have come to associate with Brand. Bravo to the producer for making another of Brand's fine stories available in audio format, admirably read by Roger Dressler. For most Western collections.-- Theresa Connors, Arkansas Tech Univ., Russellville
