Overview

In the wilderness, Satan tempted Jesus in the most unlikely ways-through independence, religion, and success. The enemy's goal for us is the same, convincing us to enjoy the gifts of this world while making the Giver optional in our quest for life. But by learning to live in the Spirit, lies are exposed and moments of temptation are turned into powerful displays of conviction and character, bringing us closer to Jesus and who we are to become. Then temptation, through the victory of Jesus, can become an opportunity that slingshots our faith into a place where we can actively experience freedom in the Spirit.

Chaddick (Better: How Jesus Satisfies the Search for Meaning), founding pastor of the Hollywood church Reality L.A., prods readers to take a closer look at how they respond to temptation in their lives. He finds the most common response to this quandary is simply to run from temptation, and he doesn't dissuade Christians from this wise route. However, he also believes that people rarely take the time to reflect upon how personal convictions and character can push individuals toward growth and strength as they choose to turn from unproductive thinking. Chaddick notes that temptations reveal what we treasure most, and once those desires are in the open, Christians can learn to face sinful thoughts head-on and discover freedom from them. Chaddick candidly tells of his own struggles with temptations and how they affected his life and ministry. Since no one is immune to the siren call of something greater in this life, Chaddick's instructional primer on temptation is both timely and encouraging. (Aug.)

Los Angeles magazine - Marielle Wakim

“Tim Chaddick has the ability to strip away the impenetrable exoskeleton of a thing and crack it wide open, exposing its beating and sometimes damaged heart. He writes with graceful accessibility but also careful urgency—a combination that is all at once refreshing and convincing.

Jeremy Treat

“In The Truth about Lies, Tim Chaddick shows that temptation is not an obstacle to following Jesus; it is an opportunity to become like Jesus. In a book that will be relevant until sin is silenced and the Devil vanquished, Chaddick gives more than a strategy for battling temptation; he points to the Savior who gives us the power to overcome it. I’m incredibly thankful for Tim Chaddick and his courage to remind us all that if we have heard the truth from heaven, we can face the lies of hell.

Rankin Wilbourne

“Tim Chaddick is able to communicate to a post-Christian audience as well as anyone I know. In this book, he skillfully shows how the narrative of our culture and the questions it raises can only be satisfactorily answered by the narrative of the truth of the gospel.

Britt Merrick

“Tim Chaddick is a man of profound Scripture-formed insight and wisdom. His life and words draw me deeper into the presence and joy of Christ every time we are together and when I read his works. In The Truth about Lies, Tim leads us on a discovery of truth that helps deliver us from lesser things and brings us into a fuller, faithful experience with Jesus. I am so thankful for this book and this man; you will be well pastored as you read The Truth about Lies.

Tom Hughes

“Tim has done a brilliant job helping us think wisely about temptation and understanding it, and therefore we can respond to it with God’s help before it wrecks us. If you have ever been tempted or ever think you will be, this book will help you live more closely to the ways of Jesus.

Philip Nation

“Tim Chaddick has given us a gift with The Truth about Lies. In the middle of our temptation, God is doing a great work in us. This book is biblical, wise, and necessary.

David Lomas

“Tim Chaddick is such a gift to our generation. He combines theological expertise, pastoral concern, and cultural sensitivity in a way that few people are able to do. His gifts culminate in this book to take on a topic we need to look at with fresh eyes—the topic of temptation. The claim of the book: If we know how to approach it,
temptation can form in us Christlike character. Read this book with a highlighter!

Brian Brodersen

“Tim is one of the new generation’s preacher/teacher/writers who I’m thankful for. He’s passionate, clear thinking, articulate, deeply rooted in Scripture, and in tune with culture. The depth, transparency, and simplicity of his writing make this book both engaging and helpful. I’m certain you will be blessed and benefit greatly from it.

Brad Lomenick

“Tim is a leader we should pay attention to. This book is about the testing of a leader—something we all struggle with. Tim provides practical perspective and helpful application for the moments when our mettle is tested and our character revealed. You’ll gain crucial insight into the process of maturing as a follower of Jesus, the blocking and tackling of temptation and pushing through, the constant daily renewing of our minds and hearts. It’s messy, but meaningful. It’s raw, but refined. If you are a leader, read this book!

John Mark Comer

“Life comes down to moments. And not all moments are created equal. Some matter a lot more than others. In those crucial, axis-point moments, the kind that set the trajectory for our future, how will we respond? Will we succeed or fail miserably? Will we keep our footing or fall on our faces? How do we navigate the moments of life with wisdom beyond our years and face the temptations of our hearts with courage and resolve? In The Truth about Lies, Tim leads us into a new place as he sets a new framework for how to live and how to live well. If you’re ready to take the journey, I can’t think of a better guide.
