About the Author

Erin Eitter Kono is an author and illustrator of many picture books. She was born in Oshkosh, WI, and remains a huge fan of the Dells, fresh cheese curds, and Taliesin. She now lives in Southern CA where she never sees badgers or snowmobilers, but does once in a while come across a roadside giant.

PreS-Gr 2-Using a similar format to Jean Cassels's The Twelve Days of Christmas in Louisiana(Sterling, 2007), this title uses the formula of the familiar song to present facts about Wisconsin. A child writes to his cousin, telling her all about his state, and sends her related objects. Christmas is secondary to the state sights and lore-two roving Ducks (amphibious vehicles used to explore the Dells of the Wisconsin River), three huge fish (the 300-pound sturgeon found in Lake Winnebago), nine snowmobilers, and so on. Jake is excited that his friend, Emma, is coming to visit him. He sends her 12 letters with gifts from Wisconsin, among them the state bird, the state dog, five golden rings to signify that the circus museum is in Baraboo, etc. The letters are filled with historical information, events that take place in Wisconsin (the air show in Oshkosh) and amusing sites in the state (the biggest fiberglass structure in the world, a giant fish). Breezily written with lighthearted cartoon illustrations, this is an easy introduction to the state. Endpapers depict all 50 states and highlight Wisconsin with Christmas tree lights. The last few pages include a bulletin board with additional facts told through posters and a page with a short bio of famous Wisconsinites. Visitors to the state and any student studying the state will find this an entertaining way to learn about Wisconsin. (state facts and famous figures) (Picture book/nonfiction. 5-10)
