Enron

The Enron story captured America's attention because of its scale and impact, as well as the astounding duplicity of its top leaders. The Houston-based energy company continued to project an image of strength and success long after insiders knew it was failing and had begun to unload their own stock. It also did not go wholly unnoticed that Enron was the single biggest contributor to President George W. Bush's campaign, and that founder and CEO Kenneth Lay maintained a close relationship with President Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney and profited immensely from the Bush administration's deregulation of the energy market.

This lack of regulation set the stage for the Enron-created June 2000 California energy crisis which left 100,000 homes and businesses without power, caused the shutdown of major companies, and led to the loss of millions of dollars of revenue. Traders, under orders to “trade aggressively” and take advantage of California's wholesale market, purposely shut down power plants to drive up power prices. The company eventually made more than $1 billion in long-term energy contracts during the crisis. Tapes, revealed in 2007, recording the traders' glee as they profited from forest fires they watched on the news, shocked and disgusted the American public.

But Enron is most famous for the complex collection of shell companies that it created to hide its own losses. Examination of the company's records uncovered a complex series of paper transactions, shell companies, and conflicts of interest, all to achieve founder Jeffrey Skilling's goal of driving up the stock price. Documentation reflects that even the company's accountants at Arthur Andersen were often uncomfortable with many of the arrangements but failed to stop them, raising questions as early as February 2001. (Arthur Andersen, once a premier accounting firm, also went belly-up after Enron's collapse.)

Bernie Madoff

In the fall of 2008, at the zenith of the American financial crisis, multiple Wall Street firms posted losses reaching into the hundreds of millions. These losses represented the beginning of an unprecedented disaster.

In December of 2008, CNN estimated that Bernard L. Madoff Investment Securities LLC was responsible for $50 billion.

Widely touted as the biggest Ponzi scheme in history, Bernard “Bernie” Madoff lured wealthy investors with promises of high returns only to siphon away funds to finance his own lavish lifestyle. He would then replenish his coffers by recruiting more unsuspecting clients.

After decades of deception, the question remains: How did Madoff get away with it for so long?

Bonnie and Clyde

As far as high-profile and fast-paced crimes go, you need look no further than Bonnie and Clyde: 1930s outlaws of the West. Born Bonnie Parker and Clyde “Champion” Barrow, respectively, they met in West Dallas when Bonnie was just 19. Her lover and husband, Roy Thornton, had just left her, and she fell in love with Mr. Clyde Barrow after being introduced by a friend. The famous romance and crime spree began, leaving a number of dead bodies, hijacked cars and bank robberies behind them. Bonnie and Clyde are the story of a young girl, devoted to her man, and sticking by his side through theft, murder, and finally premature death.
