The Uprising:: the Escambray Rebellion
Havana, Cuba, August 6, 1960. On a stormy night, in the capital's main sports arena, Fidel Castro announces the first round of expropriations of American and national businesses and Elpidio García's family loses the bulk of their properties.
Elpidio is a resolute young man, from tough-as-nails stock, and he is not going to run away to Miami. He arms himself and goes into the Sierra del Escambray. Friends and family follow him, among them 21-year-old Rosa, whose father was killed by the ones now in power and who also struggles with her sexual orientation.
In dire need of weapons, the guerrillas assault an army outpost and wipe out the garrison. Lt. Reynaldo De la Huerta dies in the fight and his brother Antonio, also an army officer, swears revenge. He is convinced his brother's death was at the hands of the same kind of people that killed their communist union-leader father back in the early thirties.
Meanwhile in the U.S., the CIA prepares a brigade with Cuban exiles to topple the island's new government. Eisenhower approves the plan, full air support is guaranteed, and the 2506 Brigade is born. Two friends – Luis Muriel and Néstor Guttman – volunteer. Weeping, Néstor's mother clasps around his neck the Star of David pendant she wears and that has been in the family for generations: for protection, she says. Ivette, Luis' wife, is twelve weeks pregnant and pleads with him not to leave, but he is determined to go back to avenge his father's execution the year before.
The young couple spends their last weekend together in Miami Beach's Fountainebleau Hotel making love and reminiscing about their honeymoon in Varadero beach, Cuba. They dance once more to their favorite bolero, Bésame Mucho, in the hotel's cabaret.
Luis and four others parachute into el Escambray to prepare the rebel groups for the impending invasion. The CIA needs the men and women fighting in those mountains as back up for the invasion. Luis connects with Elpidio and meets the attractive Rosa.
When Kennedy is elected, he changes the landing site, angering the CIA and the US Navy. The brigade's paratroopers, Néstor among them, descend on the only three roads of access to Bay of Pigs. Their mission is to stop the enemy's offensive and buy time for the brigade to land and dig in. It's a tall order. Far from the landing site, the guerrillas move on the city of Trinidad that's been left with a skeleton army garrison. They think victory is around the corner, but at the last minute, Kennedy prohibits the U.S. Navy Air Force backup and the invasion fails. Admiral Arleigh "31-knot" Burke is fuming as well as officers and servicemen. Néstor is saved by a family living in the swamps near the Bay of Pigs and meets a young woman, Asela, with whom he has a short but heated love affair. Before leaving, Néstor clasps his mother's Star of David on Asela's neck.
The guerrillas abandon Trinidad, a victorious Cuban army is returning in full force. De la Huerta makes Captain and goes after the guerrillas like a bloodhound. Luis and Néstor reunite at the house of an old Lebanese man, Hassan, who lives on the foothills of the Escambray and is Elpidio's remaining civilian supporter. The guerrillas fight an uphill battle that gets worse by the day after the Americans withdraw their support as part of the agreement with the Soviets to end the Missile Crisis. The guerrillas are abandoned, they become collateral damage.
De la Huerta sets a trap around Hassan's house. Four rebels die trying to buy time for Elpidio and the others to escape.
Months later, De la Huerta finally surrounds Elpidio and what's left of his ragtag outfit in a ring of steel and fire. The guerrillas break away with heavy loss of life and hijack a boat with the intention of escaping to the Cayman Islands. De la Huerta goes after them on another boat and attacks on open Caribbean Sea waters south of Trinidad. Luis sends a desperate SOS. The American Navy Base in Guantanamo is ordered to go rescue them; all the officers and servicemen, still remembering the bitter days of the Bay of Pigs, volunteer.
