Rex Allen Jr., despite his impressive string of 21 Top 40 country hits on Warner Brothers in the '70s and early '80s, has not been well represented in the digital age. The Very Best of Rex Allen Jr. is budget-length but mid-priced, providing less than half an hour of music. The disc collects only ten of his recordings, and some of his bigger hits are passed over in favor of lower-charting singles. One of these, "The Great Mail Robbery," failed to crack the Top 40 at all, but it was Allen's first charting single from 1973. It's a delightful track and a surprising inclusion on such a brief collection. Allen provides liner notes (including short track-by-track comments), and it's a shame that his efforts weren't enlisted for a lengthier anthology. ~ Greg Adams
