Overview

She is expected to marry, cook, and have children-and instead she's sneaking off to war. Can she manage to stay alive, save her mother, and keep the handsome son of a duke from discovering her secret? The Warrior Maiden is a reimagining of the classic Mulan tale in medieval Europe.

When Mulan takes her father's place in battle against the besieging Teutonic Knights, she realizes she has been preparing for this journey her whole life-and that her life, and her mother's, depends on her success. As the adopted daughter of poor parents, Mulan has little power in the world. If she can't prove herself on the battlefield, she could face death-or, perhaps worse, marriage to the village butcher.

Disguised as a young man, Mulan meets the German duke's son, Wolfgang, who is determined to save his people even if it means fighting against his own brother. Wolfgang is exasperated by the new soldier who always seems to be one step away from disaster-or showing him up in embarrassing ways.

From rivals to reluctant friends, Mulan and Wolfgang begin to share secrets. But war is an uncertain time and dreams can die as quickly as they are born. When Mulan receives word of danger back home, she must make the ultimate choice. Can she be the son her bitter father never had? Or will she become the strong young woman she was created to be? This fresh twist on the classic tale takes us to fifteenth-century Lithuania where both love and war challenge the strongest of heroes.

Gr 6 Up—Mulan is the illegitimate daughter of Lithuanian solider, Mikolai, and an unnamed woman from "the Orient." After Mulan's biological mother died, she was taken to Lithuania by Mikolai and raised by he and his wife, Feodosia. When Mikolai dies just prior to being called back into battle, Mulan disguises herself as a young man, also named Mikolai, and heads into battle in her father's place. While disguised as Mikolai, Mulan meets and begins to fall for Wolfgang, a fellow solider from a prominent family. Wolfgang and Mulan/Mikolai quickly become leaders among the soldiers, but then her secret is discovered. This novel is part war story, part love story, and part inspirational fiction. Unfortunately, it doesn't succeed in all it takes on. Mulan's true identity is discovered midway through the story and, rather unbelievably for the time period (in Poland during the late Middle Ages), does not seem to matter to anyone but the enemy. Wolfgang has no trouble moving past her former identity as Mikolai and falling for Mulan, but once he knows the truth he goes into full protector mode, forgetting the capable soldier she is. Most troubling, he locks her in a room during a pivotal scene to "keep her safe" while he saves the day. The novel is most successful when discussing faith, although it takes a relatively modern stance on beliefs compared to the time period in which it is set. VERDICT Purchase only where the author has a strong following.—Heather Webb, Worthington Libraries, OH
