His novels are famous for their humor (and bad puns), exploration of comparative political systems, and philosophical undertones.

Again we are placed in a world where God and Devil are into everything, good is rewarded, and evil punished. There is romance together with swords and sorcery. There is mystery and there is action and suspense. You are in to the action right from the first page. The characters are again believable as are the situations for a fantasy world. This book can be read as a stand alone story, however there are references to the events and characters in the previous books

Sequel about a medieval fantasy world where poetry holds the power of magic. Saul Bremener - poet, philosopher, and martial arts expert - falls into this world. Saul's knowledge of verse makes him a powerful wizard, but in his search for Matt he falls afoul of the evil Queen Suettray, and the usual complications ensue. Stasheff's work is well crafted and narrated, with lots of literary insertions and a balancing sense of humor; it's independently intelligible and complete in itself.

Much of the interest in The Witch Doctor is derived from how Stasheff takes medieval Catholic doctrine seriously. Stasheff helps himself through Saul's attitude to it, formed by a rejected strict religious upbringing which leads him to initially be contemptuous of the idea that Christianity could have any meaning, and a strong determination to be his own man rather than doing the bidding of God or the Devil.

Since in Allustria power is divided sharply between good and evil, Saul spends as much time debating ethics and his own fear of commitment as he does battling witches, and the whole tale is a shade deeper and more literary than the usual fantasy, albeit with a few lulls in the action. Yet there are plenty of plot twists to keep fans reading, and followers of the series A Wizard in Rhyme, of which this is the third installment, definitely will read it
