About the Author

Rollo Walter Brown (1880-1956) was born in the mining town of Crooksville, Ohio—which provided the setting for his series of novels The Firemakers (1931), Toward Romance (1932), The Hillikin, and As of the Gods (1937). His memoir I Travel by Train chronicles his journey across the United States during the Great Depression. His non-fiction works include Lonely Americans (1929) and The Creative Spirit: An Inquiry into American Life (1925).
