Purpose: As the editor explains in the preface, "General or introductory coursework in counseling theories and psychotherapy has tended to pay little attention to the relational approaches (social systems theory or social constructivism), focusing primarily on psychological theories. A student had to take a course in marriage, couple, or family therapy to be introduced to the social frameworks (as I did in my doctoral studies). This text allows for an accounting of major 'psychological' paradigm approaches, but it also provides clear examples of theories that align with the systemic-relational paradigm and the social constructivism paradigm. It also provides examples of some theories designed purposefully to cross paradigms."
Audience: The intended audience is students in counseling, social work, professional psychology, marriage and family therapy, and related professions. The editor, a professor at the University of Missouri-St. Louis, is a health service provider psychologist and family therapist. The contributors are all affiliated with U.S. institutions.
Features: The book begins with an introduction to counseling and psychotherapy and explores arguments against the field, especially the work by Thomas Szasz. Part II focuses on organic-medical and psychological paradigm approaches, examining the basic tenets of psychoanalysis and general techniques. Alfred Adler disagreed with Freud and offered a different understanding of neurosis and relationships. Carl Rogers believed that there were specific conditions that contributed to success in therapy, which would help change an incongruent self concept to a congruent self concept. Rational emotive behavior therapy was developed by Albert Ellis in 1955 in order to change maladaptive thoughts. Gestalt therapy considers how awareness (or mental flexibility) can help the individual experience the world. Part III describes systemic-relational paradigm approaches. Conjoint family therapy by Satir helps families improve their communication skills. Structural family therapy is a theory where the therapist joins the family process to facilitate behavioral alternatives in order for change to occur. Part IV covers social constructivism paradigm approaches. Steve de Shaver developed solution-focused brief therapy, which builds on small changes to replace problematic behaviors with healthy ones. Narrative therapy encourages a therapeutic conversation where clients can address problems and create a new storyline. The last part focuses on cross-paradigm approaches. Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) is used with clients who are experiencing extreme emotional dysregulation, including suicidal ideations and nonsuicidal self injury. It uses cognitive-behavioral techniques but adds a dialectical piece in order to find a middle ground solution to problems. Emotion-focused therapy was developed by Leslie Greenberg and looks at how emotions affect interpersonal conflicts. The book ends with concluding comments on the future of counseling and psychotherapy. It provides an overview of the effectiveness of psychotherapy and notes the need for new ways of measuring how counseling helps clients solve problems. The book is easy to read and contains helpful figures. A valuable feature is the "student-mentor dialogue," which appears in many of the chapters.
Assessment: This excellent book presents the principles of some of the most popular counseling theories. The student-mentor dialogues are invaluable for learning more about the theories from experts. Overall, this is an excellent resource for students of psychology and social work.
