CHAPTER 1

Once upon a time there was a little bear named Timothy. He lived in the forest with Mama Bear, and Papa Bear, and Brother Bear.

Timothy had blue eyes. Mama Bear had brown eyes. Papa Bear had brown eyes. Brother Bear had brown eyes. All of the other bears in the forest had brown eyes.

Timothy was the only blue-eyed bear that any bear had ever seen.

Timothy did not want to be different from the other bears. He could see very well with his blue eyes and they were beautiful, but Timothy did not like his eyes to be blue. He thought and thought about his blue eyes. "I wish I had brown eyes like all the other bears."

Timothy couldn't think about his blue eyes all the time because he had bear lessons to learn. He had to learn how to climb trees, and fish, and gather honey.

Mama Bear taught Timothy how to climb trees.

Timothy climbed up and climbed down and went from branch to branch. Timothy had to keep his mind on tree climbing, or he would get scratched by a branch or even fall out of a tree, kerplunk!

Sometimes Timothy said, "Mama Bear, I wish I had brown eyes like all the other bears." Then Mama Bear said, "Oh, Timothy, my little blue eyed bear:

The way you are Is the way you are, And the way you are Is fine with me."

Papa Bear taught Timothy how to fish. Timothy walked carefully on the slippery wet rocks and grabbed the fish under the water. Timothy had to keep his mind on fishing or he would slip on the rocks, splash!

Sometimes Timothy said, "Papa Bear, I wish I had brown eyes like all the other bears." Then Papa Bear said, "Oh, Timothy, my little blue-eyed bear:

The way you are Is the way you are, And the way you are Is fine with me."

Brother Bear taught Timothy how to gather honey. Timothy found the hives where the bees lived. He scooped the honey quickly and quietly. Timothy had to keep his mind on the bees or he would get stung, ouch!

Sometimes Timothy said, "Brother Bear, I wish I had brown eyes like all the other bears." Then Brother Bear said, "Timothy, my little blue-eyed bear:

The way you are Is the way you are, And the way you are Is fine with me."

One day after his lessons, Timothy went for a walk on Bear Mountain just to think about his blue eyes. He thought and thought, "I wish I had brown eyes like all the other other bears."

That very same day a man and a boy went for a walk on Bear Mountain, too. They sat down on a big rock near Timothy. Timothy saw them but they didn't see Timothy. Timothy watched them. Timothy was very quiet and they never knew he was watching them.

The man and the boy ate sandwiches and drank juice. They put the scraps in their pockets. The man took his sunglasses off and took a nap. The boy played on the rocks close by. After a while they went on their way.

Then Timothy saw something shining on the big rock. The man had left his sunglasses. Timothy tried them on. "Oh! The world looks brown," he said.

He looked at himself in a pool of water.

He didn't even look like Timothy anymore. He took the sunglasses off and looked in the water again to make sure that he was really Timothy.
