Do you reckon Tom Sawyer was satisfied after all them adventures? I mean the adventures we had down the river, and the time we set Jim free and Tom got shot in the leg. No, he wasn't. It only just p'isoned him for more. That was all the effect it had. You see, when we three came back up the river in glory, as you may say, from that long travel, and the village received us with a torchlight procession and speeches, and everybody hurrah'd and shouted, it made us heroes, and that was what Tom Sawyer had always been hankering to be. Here is the third Adventure of Tom Sawyer and Huckelberry Finn as narrated by Huck Finn himself. The pair set sail for Africa and adventure!

About the Author

Mark Twain wurde am 30.11.1835 in Florida (Missouri) geboren. Sein eigentlicher Name ist Samuel Langhorne Clemens. Der Vater starb 1847 und Twain mußte im Alter von zwölf Jahren die Schule abbrechen und begann eine Lehre als Schriftsetzer. Mit 17 Jahren ging er nach New York, dann nach Philadelphia, wo er die ersten Reiseskizzen schrieb. Von 1857 bis 1860 war er Lotse auf dem Mississippi, nahm am Sezessionskrieg auf der Seite der Konföderierten teil und war 1861 Silbersucher in Nevada. 1864 lebte er in San Francisco, 1866 als Reporter auf Hawaii und 1867 als Reisender in Europa und Palästina. Er gründete einen Verlag, mußte aber 1894 Konkurs anmelden und ging auf Weltreise, um mit Vorträgen seine Schulden abzutragen. Mark Twain starb am 21.04.1910 in Redding (Connecticut).

Few today may be aware of Twain's 1894 sequel to The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1876) and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1884). Though this novel is not up to the standard of those two immortal classics, it does make for fun listening as it places Tom, Huck, and former slave Jim in a fantastic balloon voyage across the Atlantic and North Africa. Of special interest is the narrative's frequent allusions to Richard Francis Burton's Arabian Nights. Great literature this is not, but it does contain some nice moments, and younger readers in particular will enjoy listening to actor/director/narrator Grover Gardner's (grovergardner.blogspot.com) delightful performance.
