Born and raised in Hazard, Kentucky, Emily graduated from Berea College in 1978 with a degree in English and went on to work as a reporter and women's editor for a weekly newspaper in Indianapolis. She worked as a freelance writer in Cleveland, Ohio and has published articles and poetry in several journals, including the Appalachian Heritage published by Berea College and Kudzu, A Literary Magazine, published by the Hazard Community and Technical College. Emily's first book, Water-Walking Faith, was published in 2009 by AuthorHouse.
