Most of the fifty tales assembled here from the collections of folklorist Pavol Dobsinsky are translated into English for the first time. Pavol Dobsinsky (1828-85) collected the tales and published them between 1858 and 1883; few have been translated. The collection appeared at a time when the Slovak literary language was still being formed, and influenced its course. Cooper (Czech and Russian literature, Columbia U.) taught English in Slovakia in the early 1990s. To the 50 tales, he adds a pronunciation guide, glossary, classifications and commentaries, an essay on the 19th-century tradition of collecting tales, a map, and a substantial introduction.
