Description: This book addresses the theoretical foundations and contemporary practical application of transcultural nursing in providing evidence-based culturally competent care to individuals and within different healthcare settings. The accompanying website resources augment student learning or faculty teaching on transcultural nursing. The previous edition was published in 2019.
Purpose: The authors successfully contribute to theoretical transcultural nursing knowledge and the advancement of evidence-based transcultural nursing practice. The aims of each chapter are congruent with the overall objectives of the book. The learning activities in each chapter promote critical thinking and clinical judgment in the application of transcultural nursing practice. The book is extremely relevant to today's practicing nurse for the delivery of culturally competent quality care and caring.
Audience: The book is applicable to both undergraduate and graduate nursing education. The content of the book and especially the presentation of recent research on transcultural nursing are beneficial to any practicing nurses for enhancing the delivery of culturally competent care. The beginning chapters are most useful to nursing students in first clinical courses to enrich history taking and health assessments. Each of these expert authors has made extensive contributions to transcultural nursing.
Features: The book is organized into four parts: transcultural nursing foundations, lifespan concepts, healthcare setting applications, and other considerations in culturally competent care. In each of the four parts of the book, the chapters flow effectively together; in the Lifespan section for example, the chapters range from childbearing to older adult care. The book uses a consistent layout in each chapter to include key terms, learning activities, evidence-based practice features, case studies, summary, and review questions. These features aid the ability to absorb the chapter content. Pictures in each chapter capture real life situations to augment content covered by the authors. For example, Figures 5-4 and 5-5 in the chapter on Transcultural Perspective in Childbearing show clients supported by midwives during home births. The four appendices on Transcultural Nursing Assessments Guides are beneficial to all levels of students and nurses in practice and highlight the myriad of important considerations. The appendices cover: Individuals and Families; Families, Groups and Communities; Healthcare Organizations; and Migrants and Refugees.
Assessment: I am grateful to the founding and new contributing authors for writing and publishing this ninth edition of Transcultural Concepts in Nursing Care. It expands the theoretical knowledge of transcultural nursing and has an extremely high value in impacting the delivery of transcultural nursing care to patients, families, groups, and health settings in today's healthcare dynamic.
