Overview

In May 1984 at Rosemont College in Pennsylvania, Douglas Steere addressed the SFF Conference. He began “I am going to speak about traveling in and about my own personal journey, I haven’t done that on any other occasion in quite as full a way as I’m going to do here this morning.” He then proceeded to share a vibrant testimony of the work of the spirit in his life. Pendle Hill is happy to be able to reproduce the text of that talk as Douglas delivered it-in an edited transcript of the talk (this pamphlet) and on audio cassette tape. The tape is available through the Pendle Hill bookstore.

We are very grateful to Helen Steere Horn for allowing us to include in this pamphlet poems she wrote in the last years of her father’s life. The poems bear witness to the spirit at the heart of Douglas Steere’s personal journey. Helen is a counselor, oral historian, and teacher of life-story writing who lives with her husband on a farm in Appalachian Ohio.

About the Author

Douglas Steere (1901-1995) was a Quaker scholar of philosophy at Haverford College from 1928 to 1963. He served as a representative to Vatican II and as cofounder of the Ecumenical Institute of Spirituality.

His vision and faith helped establish Pendle Hill and Radnor Meeting in the 1930s. A life-long member of Radnor Meeting, Douglas gave of his heart and soul to many who came to know him through his writings, lectures, and the retreats he led with his wife, Dorothy. We feel blessed to be able to publish this new pamphlet of one of his most popular talks.

We are grateful to the Upper Room, Nashville, Tennessee, for permission to reprint “Mind Your Call, That’s All in All” from Gleanings: Selected Writings by Douglas V. Steere (soon to be out of print).
