Description: This is a softcover version of the medical section of Comprehensive Treatment of Chronic Pain by Medical, Interventional, and Integrative Approaches, Deer et al. (Springer, 2013).
Purpose: The purpose is to provide an evidence-based review of the indications and effectiveness of different drugs used in pain medicine. This is an important objective as there is an ever-growing list of medications with ever-growing indications with limited evidence for their effectiveness. The book brings all the evidence for the leading drugs together.
Audience: The target audience is chronic pain physicians, but primary care physicians and other medical specialists, particularly rheumatologists, who treat patients with chronic illnesses also will find it most helpful. The authors and contributors are all practicing pain physicians and are experienced in the art of treating chronic pain patients.
Features: The initial two chapters review pain physiology and pharmacogenetics. The rest of the book is basically divided into two parts, with the first covering nonopioid interventions and the second covering opioid-based interventions and their implications. One chapter is dedicated to methadone use. The chapters on the legal aspects of prescribing opioids, the role of drug screening in clinical practice, and drug-drug interactions are very useful. All chapters are well written, brief, and to the point. Each chapter starts with a summary of key points in a bulleted list and is well referenced. However, one omission that stands out is the lack of discussion of intravenous infusion therapies, namely intravenous lidocaine and ketamine, which are now commonly used in clinical practice.
Assessment: This is a nice effort with good intentions and, overall, it is the most comprehensive book available dedicated solely to the discussion of medical interventions for treating chronic pain. It provides evidence-based guidance and tries to bring order to the chaotic world of chronic pain medicine.
