Overview

Combining the awe of Mary Oliver with the wry, human sympathy of Nikki Giovanni and the stoical insight of Maxine Kumin, the 122 poems in Tree Full of Stars include a range of subjects and tones that turn ordinary experiences into extraordinary insights. Themes include growing up in small-town Tennessee, but with a worldly awareness of the issues of social justice as well as social mores, as well as celebration of nature, art, and poetry and the complicated joys and sorrows of family life. Accessible as well as intelligent, these poems will make you laugh, cry, and contemplate your own experiences in new ways.

Anne Meek has published more than sixty poems in literary journals including The Small Farm, Phoenix, The Windless Orchard, Southbound, Plainsong, Ripples, Skipping Stones, and The Poet’s Domain. Her professional career has spanned years as a teacher of kindergarten, Head Start, and elementary and middle schools, as well as an elementary school principal and supervisor. Eventually, she became managing editor of Educational Leadership magazine and book acquisitions editor for the Association of Supervision and Curriculum Development. She always brought her love of poetry into the classroom and organized the first Poet-in-the-Schools event in Knoxville, Tennessee, and continuing before and after her retirement to visit classrooms all over Tennessee and Virginia as an informal ambassador for poetry. More recently, she has been on the boards of the Cultural Alliance of Hampton Roads and Hampton Roads Writers. She lives in Norfolk, Virginia, though she hearkens from Martin, Tennessee.
