Overview

Trigeminal neuralgia and other cranial neuralgias comprise a group of facial pain conditions, characterised by disabling pain attacks that selectively respond to specific treatments. Although not as common migraine, they affect over 1% of the population and must be recognised and adequately treated in clinical practice. The spectrum of cranial neuralgias is wide and as a consequence the conditions are managed by a range of different specialists. Studies show that delayed diagnoses and mismanagement are common and can lead to depression and suicide. 36 recognised experts from nine countries have contributed to OPML Trigeminal Neuralgia and Other Cranial Neuralgias to guide you through the maze of pathophysiology, clinical features, diagnosis-making, and condition-specific treatments. The approach is practical and evidence-based and ready for real-world applications. The value of phenotyping, targeted investigations, and treatment algorithms is emphasised. About the Author

Joanna M. Zakrzewska is both dentally and medically trained (King's College London and University of Cambridge). Between 2007- 2015 she set up the largest award winning UK multi-disciplinary facial pain service at UCLH, London. Currently working part time at UCLH while setting up a national Trigeminal Neuralgia Institute. Chairperson of Medical Advisory Board and founder Trustee of Trigeminal Neuralgia Association UK (patient support group). She has written five books, contributed to 27 chapters, written over 180 peer reviewed papers and has been rated as the top expert in trigeminal neuralgia in the world. Lectured as an invited speaker in 100 international meetings in 30 countries. Turo Nurmikko is a certified Neurologist and Pain Specialist. 1991 he received his PhD (DSurgMedSci) from the University of Tampere, Finland. He established and led the Tampere Pain Clinic Tampere 1983-1994 before moving to work as a Consultant of Relief at the Walton Centre, Liverpool UK until 2015 where he founded and headed a multidisciplinary facial pain clinic 2005-2013. He was Chair of Pain Science at University of Liverpool 2001-2011 and Honorary Professor 2012-2018. He was a founding member of Neuropathic Pain SIG, IASP, and its first Chairman (2002-2005). He held the directorship of Pain Research Institute, Liverpool 2001 - 2018. He has written over 100 peer-reviewed articles and 40 textbook chapters and lectured as an invited speaker in 180 international meetings in 30 countries.

Description: This is a comprehensive approach to the recognition, diagnosis, and management of trigeminal neuralgia and other orofacial and cranial neuralgias. The book provides historical context, a history of treatment, an overview of anatomy, physiology, and genetics, and then delves into diagnosis, treatment, and management of trigeminal neuralgia. Later chapters cover the trigeminal autonomic cephalalgias, and the book ends with an overview of patient resources and patient artwork.
Purpose: The purpose of this book is to educate physicians on the spectrum of trigeminal neuralgia and other forms of facial pain. This book aims to bring to the forefront the importance of considering biopsychosocial approaches to the treatment of these often difficult and refractory cases. These are worthy objectives, because the landscape of medicine is fast-changing, and an individualized approach, particularly to these often debilitating and demoralizing conditions is well needed. The book absolutely meets the objectives as laid out by the authors and will make a nimble and accessible reference text for anyone interested in treating these disorders.
Audience: This book is written for healthcare practitioners, particularly neurologists or pain management specialists who see trigeminal neuralgia or other orofacial pain disorders. The book will meet the needs of these specialities in best treating these difficult cases. The authors are credible authorities on this subject. Dr. Zakrzewska is an internationally recognized trigeminal neuralgia expert.
Features: The book covers an introduction to the anatomy and physiology of trigeminal neuralgia and orofacial pain disorders. This is actually very important to the understanding of how one treats these disorders and is a welcome reminder and overview. Further, the tome delves into the treatment paradigms for these conditions. The book is written in an easy-to-understand prose and flows smoothly. It is well organized and engages the readers with well-placed figures, pictorial representations, and graphs. There are no glaring shortcomings of this book. The only criticism could be that it does not delve into the level of detail one might expect from a full reference text, however, at approximately 230 pages, it balances the fine line of being very thorough without being overly massive.
Assessment: As a headache specialist, I find this book to be very useful as a reference in my clinical practice. It both summarizes therapy and provides educational case-based examples, which can easily be referenced in the future. That is to say, the book can be read cover to cover or referenced on an as-needed basis. It will certainly have a place on the bookshelf in my office and I anticipate referencing it frequently.
