Jack Kerouac estuvo varias veces en Ciudad de México, cuando aún era un escritor primerizo que solo había publicado La ciudad y el campo y trataba de colocar En el camino. El alter ego de Kerouac, Jack Duluoz, volvió a México en verano de 1955 y en otoño de 1956. Tristeza unifica las dos últimas visitas y describe la pasión delirante y contradictoria que siente Duluoz por la joven Tristeza, que ha enviudado mientras tanto. Es la historia de una redención frustrada (una redención doble, porque Kerouac, al tratar de salvar a la muchacha de la drogadicción, trata de salvarse a sí mismo), y también un recorrido iniciático por el infierno de la capital mexicana. Esperanza Villanueva, según contó Kerouac años después, acabó casándose con el jefe de policía de Ciudad de México. La novela se publicó en edición de bolsillo en 1960.
