Overview

Kenny Wayne Shepherd decided to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Trouble Isâ?¦ -- not his first record but rather the debut of the Kenny Wayne Shepherd Band -- by revisiting the album in its entirety, cutting a new version of the record with its original producer Jerry Harrison. The lineup of the KWSB has changed some in the interim -- notably, original bassist Tommy Shannon retired, so Shepherd's regular bassist, Kevin McCormick, stepped into his shoes -- but it's otherwise the same cast playing the same songs only from a different vantage point. Shepherd and his band do sound older but that's a good thing. Where the original Trouble Isâ?¦ crackled with brash, youthful energy and was powered by Shepherd's oversized guitar, this 2022 edition feels more relaxed. The guitar still packs a wallop and the band plays with a mighty swing but the grooves dig deeper and there's an appealing weathered element to KWS's voice. Taken as a whole, the album offers proof that Kenny Wayne Shepherd has matured into the blues-rock road warrior he wanted to be back in 1997. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
