Tuberous sclerosis is the prototype of a category of malformations uniquely characterized by disturbances in cellular differentiation and growth. It presents with a complex association of different neurological phenotypes, including seizures, cognitive impairments and autism. It is important not only because it is a relatively common hereditary neurological disease with high morbidity, but because it has implications in other pathological processes, such as dysplasia and neoplasia, hamartoma formation and other disturbances in morphogenic processes.

Purpose: The author/editor wishes to update textbook information: much progress has been made since the previous monograph by Gomez. This is a needed text. The disease is common, may go unrecognized, and has multi-organ manifestations. The book is a superb review of current and past knowledge.
Audience: The book can be used by interested parties at all levels, especially neurologists, urologists, cardiologists and dermatologists whose areas of concern are affected by tuberous sclerosis.
Features: The book is comprehensive and definitive, giving up-to-date and historical information on clinical, pathologic, radiologic, genetic, and biochemical aspects of tuberous sclerosis. Historical and genetic topics are especially well discussed, but there are no weak chapters.
Assessment: This is a superb book that will replace the previous definitive text Gomez, MR, Tuberous Sclerosis Complex, 3rd Edition, New York; Oxford University Press, 1999. It will be widely read and referenced by practitioners and academicians.
