Overview

This is a reissue of a four-song EP Columbia originally released in 1966, and in some ways it is the perfect Cyrkle record, illustrating as it does both the pros and cons of this intriguing group. The Cyrkle's two hits are here, the Paul Simon-penned "Red Rubber Ball" and the summer goof-off anthem "Turn Down Day," both of which feature bright, deftly arranged production (done by John Simon), considerable pop smarts, and wonderful ensemble harmonies. The other two tracks, "Big, Little Woman" and "How Can I Leave Her," written by group members Don Danneman and Tom Dawes, try to work the same magic but in the end sound like sunshine pop album filler. The Cyrkle tried hard to follow up their initial chart success, but in this case the cream rose to the top early, and "Red Rubber Ball" and "Turn Down Day" remain the only essential Cyrkle songs. ~ Steve Leggett
