INTRODUCTION

At the turn of the century, Koloman Moser was Vienna's preeminent graphic artist. He was among the founders of the Secession movement in 1898, as well as the literary and artistic publication Ver Sacrum. He was a professor at the Kunstgewerbeschule, and in 1903 he and noted designer Josef Hoffmann founded Wiener Werkstätte, a school dedicated to the concept of creating a "complete living environment."

This is a reprint of Moser's seminal 1901–1902 portfolio, part of a larger work entitled Die Quelle (with contributions by additional artists). In this group of sixty design patterns, Moser shows one aspect of his creative versatility, by demonstrating ideas for woven and print mediums, and by combining forms from nature, textures, and untraditional chromatic colors. He also incorporates elements of Japanese woodblocks, fauna and flora, and geometric motifs, creating a kaleidoscope of harmony and fantasy called Jugenstil. His unequaled brilliance in both applied and fine arts has left a living legacy of taste still vibrant at the end of the twentieth century.
