Description: This outline-style review for the neurology board examination covers the major subspecialty areas of neurology as well as basic neuroscience, neurophysiology, and psychiatry. The first edition was published in 2006.
Purpose: This book strives to provide a comprehensive but concise review of material tested on the neurology board exam as well as the yearly resident in-service examination. There are relatively few neurology board review books and this one accomplishes its goal. It is succinct enough to scrutinize in a reasonable amount of time without losing out on high-yield details.
Audience: It is intended for neurology residents studying for the neurology board exam, with the implicit expectation that they have a fundamental knowledge base in clinical neurology, basic neuroscience, and psychiatry. Intentionally, as evidenced by the outline style, this book does not serve as a primary learning leaning tool, but as a supplement/review. Experts from multiple disciplines, including neurology, neurosurgery, psychiatry, pathology, and radiology, author the book.
Features: This review covers clinical neurology, neurophysiology, pediatric neurology, selected neurologic subspecialties, basic neurosciences, includes a section on psychiatry, neurobehavior, and neuropsychology, and ends with 50 practice questions. Strengths of the review include the crisp diagrams in the neuroanatomy section as well as multiple comparative tables throughout. Relative weaknesses include a somewhat brief chapter on dementia syndromes, while dedicating chapters to neurourology and neurorehabilitation that could have been condensed and included in other chapters. Highlights include the high-yield facts of frequently tested material that are emphasized and clearly marked and the access to online material, including sample cases, interactive flashcards, and more.
Assessment: This can be a helpful resource for trainees preparing for the neurology board examination or yearly in-service exams.
