Purpose: The purpose is to provide a ready-to-use, procedural guide to ultrasound interventions in pain management. The book covers the indications, relevant anatomy, and technique for performing the interventions, and has a review of the relevant literature to support the procedure. The collection of authors and contributors have succeeded in providing a guide ready for use by proceduralists of all skill levels.
Audience: The intended audience is residents, fellows, and practitioners from multiple specialties who practice interventional pain management. This book will be an easy-to-reference guide for both new learners and seasoned clinicians.
Features: Two of the 27 chapters address the basic principles and physics of ultrasound, general musculoskeletal scanning, and interventions. The rest of the chapters address specific anatomical locations or nervous structures. Each chapter begins with the anatomy, pathophysiology, and typical clinical presentations. Good color illustrations demonstrate the relevant anatomy. The chapter then addresses patient selection and ultrasound scanning with easy to understand illustrations demonstrating where scanning occurs on the body, the orientation of the probe, and the needle entry site. High-quality ultrasound images with clear labels demonstrate the expected visualized anatomy and needle path. Next, there is a detailed description of the procedure, recommended equipment, and medications to be used, as well as useful clinical pearls. Finally, each chapter concludes with a well-researched literature review and suggested reading list.
