Description: This is quite an extensive collection of ultrasound-guided techniques for various pain and regional anesthesia procedures. This update of the 2009 edition has about 30 more chapters with an additional 200 pages of description of blocks. The additions focus on pain blocks, anatomy of nerves, and ultrasound technology. Access to an online version will be available soon.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide up-to-date information on the role of ultrasound in regional anesthesia and pain medicine for both adults and children. The book covers nearly every use of ultrasound as it relates to anesthesia and its various subspecialties.
Audience: The intended audience is anesthesiologists and practicing pain physicians. The book's brief yet in-depth treatment makes it useful for people with varying degrees of experience. The book clearly meets its stated objectives. It is edited by experienced authors who oversee contributors of all levels of experience.
Features: The first section, aptly titled "Fundamentals," covers basic terminology in regional anesthesia and the innervation of the human body. My favorite part is the chapter on the microanatomy of nerves and the review of basic principles of nerve stimulation and ultrasound imaging. The next three sections describe various blocks in the upper limb, the lower limb, and the trunk. One section is dedicated to regional anesthesia in children and another details the techniques of blocks performed for chronic pain conditions. The book has an excellent format. Basic concepts are discussed in an impressively detailed fashion. Each chapter covers one block in a step-by-step fashion and covers important information like indications, anatomy of the region, ultrasound setup, needle selection, and local anesthetic selection. This is followed by a very clear description of the block technique. Complications and or helpful tips for block success are discussed. The prominent feature of the book is the numerous illustrations and cadaver and ultrasound images that accompany each block. Despite the level of detail, the text is kept to a minimum and descriptions are clear and simple. At times the book lacks detailed discussions, especially in the area of basic concepts of nerve stimulation and ultrasound, but these are not relevant to its purpose. There is nothing missing from this book.
Assessment: There are an increasing number of books on this topic, but they are either too short or too long, or they do not cover pediatric regional topics or pain related blocks. This book does it all and does it splendidly. No question, it is one of the best books on ultrasound-guided regional anesthesia.
