Description: This 80-page softcover guide and atlas contains sonogram examples of many findings encountered in reproductive endocrinology and infertility (REI) practice and general gynecology. Each image-rich chapter contains 20 to 30 sonograms and descriptive legends. Intervening text is limited and supports the teaching points illustrated in the sonograms. Logical headers within each of the 10 chapters aid information searches.
Purpose: This practical guide initially was envisioned as a reference for sonographer trainees. The numerous sonograms certainly provide normal and abnormal examples and an initial foundation in gynecologic sonography. Its discussion of imaging artifacts and remedies is especially helpful to a new sonographer. As an introductory book, future editions may benefit from greater explanation of sonography fundamentals. Examples might be discussions of ALARA and appropriate use of color Doppler in the first trimester.
Audience: Filled with sonogram examples, this serves as a useful atlas resource for nursing staff and trainee clinicians in REI. Trainees in sonography and in general gynecology also would benefit from this collection of normal and abnormal clinical examples. As such, this book may best serve as an initial introduction to female pelvic sonography. Jane S. Fonda is an experienced clinical sonographer and sonography instructor. Dr. Ledger is a well-published professor on REI topics and Dr. Rodgers is clinically active in both REI and general gynecology.
Features: The 10 chapters cover infertility and general gynecology topics. Numerous good-quality, grayscale, and color sonograms make up the bulk of each chapter and are accompanied by succinct descriptive legends. Unique features of the book include a glossary of terms, a reference page of all the book's references, and an index. All are appropriate for an image atlas. In future editions, expansion of coverage of 3-D sonography and color Doppler might be considered. Also, greater use of indicator arrows within a sonogram might better direct a novice's eye to the teaching point.
Assessment: The rich images chosen by the authors illustrate classic examples found in REI and general gynecology. This atlas may best serve as an adjunct to a more codified classroom course or as a visual complement to a didactic book.
