Description: This second edition of a book on the use of ultrasound for fetal imaging adds 3D images.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a comprehensive resource to assist in the formation of differential diagnoses as well as prognostic findings on imaging. The authors do a good job of achieving their goal, although some chapters are better than others.
Audience: This will be helpful for clinicians and sonographers who specialize in the care of complicated obstetrical patients.
Features: The book begins with a background chapter on the normal anatomic survey before exploring complications, but it assumes that readers have some background in how to obtain images. This chapter would have benefitted from some cartoon renderings next to the US pictures to orient novice learners. Complications are divided by different anatomical areas of the body. A table highlighting the different types of aneuploidy screening — along with test performance — would have been helpful. Since this is an image book, the pictures are vital and, as a whole, they are well done, clear, and concise. I would have liked better descriptions of the wave forms in the Doppler pictures, but that is a personal preference. The chapter on thoracic anomalies is an example of a well-done chapter. Figure 6.5 highlights what I wanted in chapter 1, cartoons next to US pictures to bring these images into focus. The differential diagnoses are accurate, and the discussion of LHR (lung-head ratio) is well done. I particularly liked the added discussion of "other" anomalies found in the chest. It really helps to flesh out the differential diagnosis for clinicians. Importantly, it provides a quick reference for readers who seek it out due, perhaps, to a diagnosis that is seen in clinic.
Assessment: This is a solid book with good images and some interesting features. The figures in table 8 that show how to work through a differential (complete with images!) are a nice touch. Because the book assumes that readers have some background, it cannot replace more comprehensive books. However, there is enough information here to make it a nice addition to a library.
