...Once upon a time Uncle Wiggily met Baby Bunty on her skates. "Oh, Uncle Wiggily!" laughed the little rabbit girl, "why don't you get a pair and come roller skating with me?" The bunny sort of twinkled his pink nose doubtful like. "Do you think an old rabbit like me could skate?" he asked. "Of course you could! I'll teach you if you've forgotten!"

On the tenth of January in the year nineteen-ten, the very first tale of Uncle Wiggily hopped into the pages of the Newark News. For nearly forty years, save for the day of rest, a new Uncle Wiggily story by Garis was published in the paper every single day, and the series soon became a sensation all across the nation.

When Garis decided to retire from the paper in 1947, he had spun more than 11,000 tales about Uncle Wiggily. With his relatable characters and gripping plots, Garis became one of the most influential children's authors of his time. Even today, many of his works, particularly the Uncle Wiggily stories, continue to be beloved and easily accessible through the internet.

In 1916, Milton Bradley came out with an Uncle Wiggily board game, which proved to be so popular that it was reissued in 1947, 1954, 1967, and again in 1988. In fact, the game had made its debut much earlier and had remained a favorite among children until the 1970s.

About the Author

Howard R. Garis (April 25, 1873 – November 6, 1962) was an American author, best known for a series of books that featured the character of Uncle Wiggily Longears, an engaging elderly rabbit. Many of his books were illustrated by Lansing Campbell. Garis and his wife, Lilian Garis, were possibly the most prolific children's authors of the early 20th century.
