Description: This is a useful new book on schizophrenia. Written and edited by a clinician-researcher in the field, it is a helpful review of the literature for students of this most devastating disorder.
Purpose: The author hopes the book "will help motivate some individuals to become involved in the care and search for improved understanding..." of schizophrenia.
Audience: The intended audience is essentially anyone who works with patients suffering from schizophrenia. It would be useful for residents in psychiatry residency training programs who would need a broad understanding of schizophrenia.
Features: The book's 16 chapters are grouped into six sections including reference and index sections. Section 1 reviews historical concepts, evolving diagnostic criteria, epidemiology, course and outcome, phenomenology and syndromes. Section 2 summarizes the vulnerability-stress models and general systems theory. Section 3 focuses on biological aspects with chapters on genetics, brain systems, and neurochemical theories. Section 4 addresses neurocognitive and neurodevelopmental issues, as well as cognitive-behavioral approaches. Section 5 discusses psychodynamic theories and family issues. The final chapter is on the patient living in the community. The references are relevant and up to date and the index was helpful.
Assessment: This is a good overview of schizophrenia that would benefit trainees in psychiatry. A worthwhile read.
