Description: This is an introduction to cancer treatment with an emphasis on the underlying mechanisms of action as well as the persistence of the drug's pharmacological and toxicological side effects.
Purpose: The main purpose is to provide a succinct overview of current cancer treatments including chemotherapies, radiotherapies, phytopharmaceuticals, bacteria and bioactive peptides, immunotherapy, and herbal therapy.
Audience: The book is intended primarily for pharmacologists and oncologists, but researchers interested in pharmacological and toxicological research also may find this book quite useful. It is written by experts, primarily from India.
Features: The book's nine chapters cover a fairly wide range of topics starting from the basics to toxicological effects. Specific chapters also cover results from research on metastasis, molecular pathways, diagnosis, and treatment. In addition, there is a discussion on new drug development along with the working principles of existing cancer drugs. Chapters 4 and 5 are particularly interesting. While the former nicely covers the various cancer treatments including surgical and medical options, the latter is interesting and kind of unique in that it describes the use of bacteria (as carriers of antitumor agents) and bioactive peptides as a robust foundation to combat cancer. Chapters are well thought out and well organized with sufficient numbers of tables and illustrations. They are also well documented and the bibliography is up to date.
Assessment: Overall, this is a comprehensive book on a niche topic that medical oncologists and pharmacologists, as well as nurses in the clinic may find quite helpful.
