Description: This book succinctly addresses the key clinical features of diabetes and other endocrine diseases. It begins by discussing the pathophysiology of hormonal imbalance and then addresses clinical findings and management of these various disease states.
Purpose: It uses a problems-based approach to address the causes, effects, and prevention of different states of hormone imbalance, with a majority of each chapter focused on diabetes.
Audience: The book is written for and will benefit a spectrum of medical practitioners (ranging from medical students to residents to instructors) and other healthcare professionals who have careers involving diabetes and endocrinology.
Features: Each of the book's three parts is outlined in the same problems-based fashion. The first introduces the topic of diabetes and each endocrine gland. The second discusses subjective symptoms and objective laboratory data associated with each of these conditions. The final part focuses on how to take care of patients with diabetes or the other endocrine conditions. The diagrams of feedback loops are necessary and helpful to visualize the interaction of different endocrine glands. The pictures of radiologic and physical exam findings are also very representative. However, since there are not that many diagrams, occasional bulleted lists and colored boxes highlight important points and break up paragraphs of text. Using different color-coded boxes to organize the type of information being displayed could have made this more aesthetically consistent. The clinical scenario questions are helpful, but a dedicated section for the cases and answer would be preferable.
Assessment: The book is well written and it succeeds in giving a brief overview of many different endocrinology disorders in a simple-to-read manner. The organization is unique in the way each part addresses a different aspect of each endocrine disease. For practitioners wanting to read about a single condition in a comprehensive manner all at once, this book will require more skipping around than other books.
