Description: This is an exceptional book on the current state of neuroimaging research findings in neuropsychiatric disorders. Since the 1980s, this field has grown immensely with the hope that eventually neuroimaging will help in rendering diagnosis and targeting treatment of these complex disorders. Written and edited by internationally recognized clinician-researchers, this book will provide readers with latest brain imaging research findings and their potential clinical applications.
Purpose: The purpose is to detail "important new findings about the role of brain abnormalities in neuropsychiatric disorders based on this new technology." Indeed, the editors and chapter authors are to be congratulated in producing an excellent state-of-the-art account of the latest research findings.
Audience: The intended audience includes clinicians, researchers, and trainees who want to learn how neuroimaging tools lead to new discoveries about brain and behavior associations in neuropsychiatric disorders.
Features: A unique aspect of this book is that each of the seven sections concludes with commentary from a leading expert in that specific area of research. The first section is a review of the neuroimaging findings in schizophrenia from the structural (including gray and white matter research), functional, and spectroscopic findings to neuroreceptor research. Similarly, the sections on mood disorders, anxiety disorders, cognitive disorders, substance abuse, eating disorders, and neurodevelopmental disorders all follow in the same format. Each chapter ends with pertinent and timely citations from the scientific literature and the index is particularly helpful.
Assessment: This is a superb book on brain imaging research findings in neuropsychiatry. Any psychiatrist who wants to keep abreast of the field needs to know this material. It is a welcome contribution to the field.
