Gr 6–9—In this addition to the series, Kat is attending a music conference at a posh mountain resort with her friend Jac. Kat, who has the ability to see and communicate with ghosts, is immediately confronted by an unhappy spirit who appears to have been a medium herself. While appreciative of Kat's abilities, Jac is distracted by her own ambivalence about taking up playing the cello again, and the attentions of a popular violinist. Conflicts abound, and Kat must help the medium cross over, and help Jac recognize that she needs to follow her own dreams and not those of her overbearing mother while still trying to enjoy her vacation. Kimmel includes some fascinating background information about the Spiritualist Movement. A satisfying and fun read with just enough of the supernatural thrown in to make it intriguing.—Kathy Kirchoefer, Prince Georges County Memorial Library System, New Carrollton, MD
