About the Author

Prof. Kinugawa is a graduate of University of Tokyo, and had long worked as a division chief of advanced heart failure in University of Tokyo.  He is now a chief of cardiology in University of Toyama, and serves as a board member in many academic societies.  He is one of KOL in the field of heart failure in Japan.

Dr. Imamura is also a graduate of University of Tokyo, and has worked with Prof. Kinugawa since he was a fellow of cardiology in University of Tokyo.  He has just returned from Chicago and joined in the HF program in University of Toyama.  He is one of rising stars among Japanese young cardiologist.

Description: This is a review of the current science in non-pharmacological therapy for heart failure. It presents a brief overview of pharmacologic therapies but focuses primarily on invasive and non-invasive modalities for treatment of advanced heart failure. This includes surgical correction of cardiac pathology, as well as support devices for acute and chronic heart failure.
Purpose: The authors aim to review the available options for physicians treating advanced cardiac failure and their relative indications. They note that these therapeutic options are to be added onto appropriate pharmacologic therapy. This is a useful objective, as it consolidates in one place the therapeutic options for specialists working with primary cardiologists in treating these complicated patients.
Audience: The book aims to be a reference for cardiologists and cardiac surgeons as well as residents and medical students. The book provides sufficient background information as to be useful for residents who may be less familiar with the field. I believe the information may be too advanced for students to fully appreciate, but it is excellent for resident level and above. The authors are both professors of internal medicine at a Japanese academic hospital.
Features: This book discusses the invasive and non-invasive monitoring and therapeutic options for advanced cardiac failure. They organize the book generally from least to most invasive therapies, starting with monitoring, non-invasive ventilatory strategies, and cardiac rehabilitation; progressing to implantable ventricular assist devices and surgical therapies to augment cardiac output; and culminating with cardiac transplant and future directions in regenerative medicine. The writing is clear and well organized. There are points in the text that would benefit from the work of a copy editor, but these do not detract from the readability. Color artwork and charts are used with good effect, and explanatory pictures are helpful in guiding the readers. There are no obvious areas that are missing in coverage.
Assessment: This is a useful addition to the literature, which aggregates the principles of cardiac physiology with the effects of the non-pharmacologic interventions available to our patients. To my knowledge, there are no comparable titles on the market.
