Description: Although this illustrated handbook of dermatology was written by dermatologists for nondermatologists, there are clinical tips that are useful for budding dermatologists in training. It is the only book that focuses on how to take a good history and the thinking behind asking these questions to help with diagnosis.
Purpose: The purpose is to teach dermatology to primary care providers.
Audience: The audience is primary care physicians, nurses, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants who see patients with skin problems as part of their medical practice. The book achieves these goals. The information is explained in simple language and is well organized.
Features: The most common dermatological conditions are discussed, including diagnoses that are potentially life-threatening and should not be missed. Clinical features are explained and accompanied by good color photographs, work-up, diagnosis, and treatments. The information on arthropods is excellent and includes detailed photographs of the insects. The provider should be able to readily identify insects if brought in by the patient.
Assessment: This book is well written and would be of use to dermatology residents as well.
