Description: This second edition updates what is known about the pathogenesis and treatment of different types of urticaria and angioedema and is expanded with three new chapters on epidemiology of urticaria, diagnostic techniques for urticaria, and nonhereditary angioedema and idiopathic anaphylaxis. The first edition was published in 2004.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide up-to-date information on the pathogenesis, diagnosis, and management of urticaria and angioedema.
Audience: The audience is dermatologists, allergists, and primary care physicians.
Features: Newer medications for managing urticaria are discussed and a logical decision analysis for treating chronic urticaria is proposed. Side-effects and precautions for medications are discussed. Advice is based on data from studies, although some anecdotal information is also presented but is noted as such. The color photographs are the same as those in the first edition. I wish the authors could locate a clearer, close up photograph for cholinergic urticaria.
Assessment: This book offers an excellent balance of practical information, basic science mechanisms, and reviews of the latest studies on urticaria. Treating urticaria is a bit like treating alopecia; it can be frustrating for both the physician and the patient. This book can help alleviate this problem and provides sound principles for managing these patients with numerous options based on good research.
