Description: This pathology review book uses an outline format book to help students prepare for the USMLE Step 1 examination.
Purpose: The book does a decent job of highlighting many of the more important pathologies and listing common testing procedures along with the biochemical background underlying the disease process.
Audience: Medical students in their first two years of training are the targeted audience. The information is factually correct and timely.
Features: In attempting to cover major pathologies that are frequently the subject of questions on the USMLE Step 1, the book uses an outline format and modular organization, allowing each part to be read and understood independently. The format allows for quick skimming and reading with disease names, key attributes, and buzz words in bold. Short blurbs provide clinical information about diseases throughout. Chapters end with multiple choice questions, answers, and explanations. The glossary includes an alphabetical list of common terms. The book omits some pathologies tested on USMLE Step 1 and contains only black-and-white images. The main focus is on biochemistry, histological findings, and laboratory testing, with insufficient clinical information for some diseases. It is left to readers to draw connections between biochemistry and phenotypic manifestations.
Assessment: This review provides the basic information needed to pass the USMLE Step 1 examination. Its brevity and easy readability make it appropriate for medical students with a target USMLE Step 1 score around the national average. The lack of information on some minor diseases and integration of concepts, as well as inadequate clinical information, means it is not ideally suited for students with target scores over one standard deviation above the national average.
