Microbiology, immunol­ ogy, infectious diseases, rheumatology, and ophthalmology are the seeds of this textbook on uveitis. Over the years, these branches of medicine have been cultivated and garnered to care for patients with inflammatory diseases of the eye, a most hardy species in the family of ocular maladies. The aim of this clinical manual is to give both a serviceable frame­ work and practical information on ocular inflammatory disease. The first section is devoted to general principles and commonly held sup­ positions in the field of uveitis. A system of diagnosis, based on the differential, is also offered. Traumatic uveitis is addressed in the second section. The third part examines infectious diseases that have been identified with uveitis. These are frequently curable forms of ocular inflammation caused by replicating foreign antigens. The fourth section of this textbook considers inflammatory diseases of the eye with a presumed autoimmune mechanism. A disobedient, autoreactive immune response is postulated to playa role in these forms of uveitis. Masquerade and idiopathic conditions are discussed in the final chapters. Etiology, epidemiology, pathogenesis, clinical presentation, diagnosis, differential diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis are provided for each disease syndrome. As with most gardens, there are many styles and delightful entrances to the field of uveitis.

This book is a new clinical manual of ocular inflammatory disease, written by a highly respected expert in the field. It is designed to provide a framework for understanding ocular inflammatory disease as well as practical information for the clinician. It is a useful manual for ophthalmology residents and general ophthalmologists. The book is divided into five sections. The first section addresses general principles, including the clinical approach to the patient with ocular inflammation, laboratory testing, and basics of medical and surgical therapy of uveitis. It is well organized and contains an excellent example of a questionnaire to be filled out by uveitis patients. The second section provides a succinct summary of the sequelae of surgical and nonsurgical trauma. The third section discusses inflammation secondary to infection and includes chapters on viral, bacterial, fungal, and protozoal diseases. It highlights both common and rare ocular infections and provides information on diagnosis, differential diagnosis, and treatment. This section also includes an excellent review of ocular manifestations of AIDS. The fourth section deals with immunologic diseases, divided according to immune mechanism and subdivided according to specific disease entity. Each subdivision contains useful information on etiology, epidemiology, pathogenesis, clinical presentation, diagnosis, differential diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis. The final section addresses neoplastic and infectious diseases that can masquerade as uveitis. The text is beautifully illustrated with 78 color and numerous black and white photographs. This book is ideally suited for ophthalmology residents and general ophthalmologistsinterested in uveitis. It is well organized, well written, and beautifully illustrated. It would make an excellent addition to any reference library.
