Description: This is a series of papers written by an interdisciplinary group of researchers on the topic values in professional practice. The authors are from South Wales and the South of England, hence many of the examples reflect European culture. Though the publication addresses professions in general, the emphasis is on health, healthcare, and management. Each chapter builds a philosophical conversation around values, professions, professional practice, and the relationship between them.
Purpose: The authors state that the aim of the book is to break the uncritical silence about the relationship between values and professions, and to provide a needed introduction to the ways in which values are understood by, and impinge upon, different professional groups. Furthermore, the authors intend to provide a clear overview of how different professions and professionals might conceive of, handle, and be affected by the values they adopt.
Audience: The diverse authorship brings academic expertise from theology, engineering, healthcare, philosophy, sociology, and the humanities. This team of experts demonstrate impressive authority. They suggest, however, that the target audience is everyone, particularly professionals involved with or affected by professions and their activities. Due to the complex nature of the subject matter, it seems the target audience would be much more limited.
Features: The book covers a comprehensive view into professions and values including historical context, conflicts and identity, relation to codes of practice, education, training, and research. It compares examples of sociological and philosophical approaches in the context of modern Western society. Since the authors are from the United Kingdom, their healthcare reference is from that of a National Health Service delivery system which may add value for many readers. The diverse subjects explored in the book provide a thorough multidimensional examination of the topic.
Assessment: Although this book presents an exquisite dialogue of the topic by renowned experts, its usefulness may lie more appropriately in the academic realm of philosophy, sociology, and theology. Its practical application for everyday professionals is less apparent.
