About the Author

Sarah Milroy is the former editor and publisher of Canadian Art magazine and a co-founder of the Canadian Art Foundation. From 2001 to 2010, she served as chief art critic of the Globe and Mail. Sarah co-curated From the Forest to the Sea: Emily Carr in British Columbia with Ian AC Dejardin in 2015.

Ian AC Dejardin is Executive Director of the McMichael Canadian Art Collection. He has previously curated the Painting Canada series: Tom Thomson and the Group of Seven (2011) and From the Forest to the Sea (as above) with Sarah Milroy.

Painter and designer Vanessa Bell (1879–1961) was the most important female artist at the center of the Bloomsbury Group—artists, writers, and intellectuals who met beginning in 1905 to support one another's creative endeavors, at Bell's and her sister Virginia Woolf's house in London. As a painter, Bell's work reflected the trends in modernism she culled from French postimpressionists such as Henri Matisse, German expressionists, and others. Using color and form to express her singular vision of nature and life, Bell flourished as an artist during motherhood, celebrating the domestic through her paintings of interiors, still lifes, portraits of friends, and landscapes in and around the house she shared in the Sussex countryside with husband Clive Bell and fellow artist and lover Duncan Grant.
