About the Author

Moustapha Hamdi gained his medical degree from the Medical School of Damascus, Syria, and subsequently worked in general surgery before commencing his plastic surgery training at Brugmann University Hospital, Brussels, Belgium. He was awarded a Fellowship in Microsurgery at Canniesburn Hospital, Glasgow, Scotland in 1996 and in the following year became a Fellow of the Collegium Chirurgicum Plasticum (FCCP). In 1997 he also graduated as a Specialist in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at the Free University of Brussels and obtained a PhD in Plastic Surgery for work on pedicled perforator flaps in breast surgery. As winner of a European Association of Plastic Surgery/American Association of Plastic Surgery Fellowship, Dr. Hamdi undertook a further Fellowship in Aesthetic and Oculoplastic Surgery in Atlanta in 2005. Since 2008 he has been a Professor in the Plastic Surgery Department at Gent University Hospital, Belgium, and in 2011 he was appointed Head of the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Brussels University Hospital. He has also been a visiting professor at various universities in USA and Europe. Dr. Hamdi is a member of the editorial boards of the European Journal of Plastic Surgery and the Journal of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery. He is the author of more than 100 publications in peer-reviewed journals, and won the Hans Anderl Award from the European Association of Plastic Surgery for the best publication during 2005-2010.
